Background of the study
Language is a potent tool in constructing political narratives, particularly in regions where indigenous languages serve as symbols of identity and resistance. In Tiv communities of Benue, political leaders utilize the Tiv language not only as a medium of communication but also as an instrument to shape political ideologies and mobilize support. Through strategic rhetoric, these leaders embed cultural symbols, proverbs, and traditional idioms into their speeches, thereby reinforcing a collective political identity and asserting community autonomy (Ogbonna, 2023). Such language practices contribute to political narratives that resonate deeply with Tiv voters, forging a connection between cultural heritage and modern political aspirations. Additionally, the interplay of traditional and modern language forms allows these leaders to negotiate between preserving age-old values and addressing contemporary issues. However, with the influence of globalization and digital media, traditional linguistic forms are under pressure, which may lead to diluted political messaging. This study appraises how Tiv language shapes political narratives by analyzing political speeches, campaign materials, and public reactions, aiming to uncover the extent to which linguistic choices affect political outcomes and community identity (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the central role of the Tiv language in political messaging, modern influences and inconsistent language use among Tiv leaders have resulted in fragmented political narratives. Such discrepancies may weaken the persuasive power of political discourse and diminish cultural resonance (Ogbonna, 2023). The absence of standardized communication strategies further complicates efforts to fully harness the Tiv language as a tool for political mobilization.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess how Tiv language is used to shape political narratives.
  2. To identify challenges that undermine linguistic authenticity.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing effective political communication.

Research questions:

  1. How is Tiv language utilized in political narratives by Tiv leaders?
  2. What challenges affect the authenticity of these narratives?
  3. What strategies can improve language use in political communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the pivotal role of language in political mobilization among Tiv communities. The insights gained will inform political strategists and cultural policymakers to refine communication practices that preserve indigenous identity while engaging modern electorates (Ogbonna, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Tiv political discourse in Benue; excludes other regions and languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Political narratives: Constructed messages that shape political opinions.
  • Tiv language: The indigenous language of the Tiv people.
  • Cultural identity: The collective sense of belonging rooted in shared traditions.
